China Shopping Agent Guide

How buying agents work, how to order from Taobao and 1688 step by step, what the fees actually are, and why the same factory product costs a fraction of retail.

01What a shopping agent actually does

Buying directly from Taobao from outside China is close to impossible: sellers do not ship abroad, checkout wants a Chinese phone number and payment method, and customer service is in Chinese. A buying agent sits in the middle and solves all three at once.

1. Buying

They order on Taobao, 1688, Weidian or Tmall with a domestic account and Chinese payment methods. You pay in a currency you can actually use.

2. Receiving

The seller ships domestically to their warehouse — usually free or a few yuan. Everything you order lands at one address.

3. Inspecting

Staff open the parcel and photograph the item before it leaves China. This is the most valuable thing an agent does for you.

Why not buy from a marketplace that already ships worldwide?

Because of the price gap. The same factory that supplies a domestic retail platform often lists the identical item on Taobao or 1688 for a fraction of the price. Buying through a reseller means paying a convenience margin the agent model lets you skip. There is a full breakdown of why Chinese products are so cheap.

02How to order, step by step

Details differ between agents, but this sequence is universal. Understand these eight steps and you can use any agent without another tutorial.

  1. Create an account and top up

Register, then add funds to your balance or link a payment method. Top up only what you plan to spend — balances are not bank accounts and some agents charge to withdraw.

  2. Get the product link

Paste the Taobao, 1688, Weidian or Tmall item URL into the agent's submission box. Mobile share links work too.

  3. Specify the variant, not just the link

The single most common first-order mistake. A link is a page containing many products. State colour, size, version and quantity in the seller's own words — if the listing says "black, XL, upgraded", write exactly that.

  4. Pay for the item

The agent purchases and the order moves to Purchased. Status runs Pending → Purchased → Seller Sent → Warehouse Received.

  5. Wait for the domestic leg

Usually 3–7 days from order to warehouse, depending on the seller's dispatch speed. Pre-orders and made-to-order items run far longer.

  6. Review the QC photos

Warehouse staff photograph what arrived. Read them properly before approving anything. If something is wrong, you can usually exchange or return while the item is still in China — your only cheap chance to fix a problem.

  7. Submit the parcel for shipping

Pick the items, choose a line, declare a value, pay the freight. Ask to remove the shoe box on bulky footwear to cut volumetric weight. See what shipping really costs.

  8. Track it and confirm delivery

Expect roughly 7–20 days in transit depending on the line. Inspect on arrival and raise issues quickly — claim windows are short.

Cheapest habit you can build: never ship a single item. Warehouse storage is usually free for 30–90 days. Order several things, let them pile up, ship one consolidated parcel. You pay handling and the first kilogram once instead of five times.

03What it costs

ChargeTypicalNotes
Service feeA % of item value, or a flat per-order feeSome agents are free here and earn on freight instead
Domestic shippingFree to a few yuanSeller to warehouse
International freightThe big oneBilled on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater
Optional extrasVariesReinforced packaging, moisture protection, box removal, insurance
Reality check: on a cheap, light item the international freight can exceed the item price. A $12 jacket weighing 900g is rarely worth shipping alone — build a batch first.

04Browse by category

Rather than pasting one link at a time, start from a category and send several items to the agent in one go. Twelve entry points, one per product family. Each page ends with a live catalogue link.

Not sure what to buy first? Start with something small and light, so the freight stays predictable while you learn the flow.

06FAQ

How long does the whole process take?

Plan on three to five weeks. Seller to warehouse 3–7 days, warehouse processing 1–3 days, international transit 7–20 days. Pre-orders and holiday peak can add a week or more.

Do I need to speak Chinese?

No. Agents handle seller communication and browser translation covers most listings. Two things still need your care: size charts (measurements, not letters) and variant selection.

Is cheap Chinese stuff actually any good?

It depends entirely on the tier you buy, not the country it came from. The same factory often ships several quality tiers from the same listing. Read how to judge quality.

Is a shopping agent cheaper than a reseller?

On the item, almost always. On total landed cost, it depends on weight. Light, high-value items win clearly; cheap heavy items can lose. Estimate freight before you commit.

What should I check before paying for shipping?

Four things: QC photos against the listing, the declared value against your country's duty threshold, volumetric versus actual weight, and what your line's insurance actually covers.

Start with one small, light item so you can watch the whole flow — link, purchase, QC, shipping — before committing a real budget.
