01The single most important thing to understand
A shopping agent does not work like a retailer. There is no 30-day returns policy waiting for you at the end of the process. Instead, the process contains three distinct windows, and the ability to return an item depends entirely on which one you are standing in.
Window 1: In China
From the moment the parcel arrives at the warehouse until you submit it for international shipping. This is where returns actually work. Domestic return freight is cheap and the seller is still reachable.
Window 2: In transit
Once you approve and pay for the international leg. Returns are theoretically possible but almost never economical, because you would pay return freight plus re-export.
Window 3: Delivered
After it reaches you. What remains is a damage or non-delivery claim with a short deadline, not a return. Keep the packaging and photograph everything immediately.
02What can and cannot be returned
Even inside Window 1, some categories are excluded by the seller or the platform. Know this before you order, not after.
| Item type | Returnable? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard clothing, not worn | Usually yes | Seller can resell it if tags are intact |
| Footwear, unworn, with box | Usually yes | Box condition matters — do not discard it |
| Defective or wrong item sent | Yes | Seller's fault, so seller normally pays freight |
| Made-to-order or customised | Usually no | Cannot be resold to anyone else |
| Underwear, swimwear, intimate apparel | No | Hygiene rules, standard across Chinese e-commerce |
| Pierced jewellery, opened cosmetics | No | Hygiene and authenticity concerns |
| Anything already shipped internationally | Effectively no | Return freight exceeds the value of the item |
| Sale or clearance listings | Varies | Many sellers explicitly mark these as final sale |

03Who pays for the return
The reason for the return determines who carries the cost, and this is the part that catches people out.
| Situation | Domestic freight (inside China) | International freight |
|---|---|---|
| Seller sent wrong item | Seller | Not applicable — return happens at warehouse |
| Item arrived damaged | Seller or agent | Claim, not a return |
| Item does not match listing | Seller, usually | Not applicable |
| You changed your mind | You | Not applicable |
| Size did not fit as expected | Usually you | Not applicable |
| Already exported, then rejected | — | You, both ways |
Domestic return freight inside China is usually small — often the equivalent of a dollar or two. It is the international leg that becomes absurd: sending a parcel back to China can cost more than the item did, which is why section 01 puts so much emphasis on catching problems before you approve shipping.
04How to raise a return, step by step
The order of these steps matters. Doing them out of sequence gives the platform a reason to refuse.
-
Inspect the QC photos the day they appear
Do not wait. Some platforms start a countdown as soon as the item is checked in, and the longer an item sits in your storage, the weaker your claim that it arrived in that condition.
-
Submit a return request through the platform, never in chat
A chat message is not a record. Use the formal return or exchange button so a case exists in the system with a timestamp.
-
State the reason in specific, checkable terms
"Sole is 2 cm shorter than the listing states" beats "quality is bad". Vague reasons get rejected because the agent cannot verify them against the seller.
-
Attach the evidence you already have
Your original QC photos are the strongest document you own. If the defect is only visible from an angle the agent did not photograph, ask for a paid re-shoot before filing.
-
Choose refund-to-balance if you plan to order again
Money returned as a warehouse balance is faster and usually fee-free. Withdrawing to a card can involve a fee and a delay. If you will buy again anyway, the balance is the better option.
-
Confirm the return was received before it closes
A return is not complete when you post the parcel. It is complete when the seller confirms receipt. Screenshot the status change.

05What happens after delivery
Once the parcel is in your hands, the mechanism changes from a return to a claim — and the window is short.
- Keep the packaging. Damage claims usually require photographs of the outer box as well as the item. Recycled boxes get claims rejected.
- Photograph on arrival, before use. A defect photographed after a week of wear reads as wear and tear, not a shipping problem.
- File within the stated window. Typical claim windows run around seven days from delivery. Missing it is common and almost always final.
- Expect the international freight to stay with you. Even a successful claim rarely reimburses what you paid to bring the parcel over.
- Escalate to the payment provider only as a last resort. A chargeback against an agent you plan to keep using will usually end the relationship.
06Three habits that cut your return rate
Returns are a cost. The cheapest return is the one you never need, and almost all of them trace back to the same three avoidable mistakes.
Order one item from an unknown seller before ordering five
The first order from a new seller is a test, not a purchase. If the item is right, the follow-up order costs you nothing extra. If it is wrong, you found out for the price of one item instead of five.
Write the variant in the seller's own words
A large share of "wrong item" cases are not seller errors at all. The buyer ordered from a listing with twenty variants and described the one they wanted in their own phrasing. Copy the exact wording of the variant, including any code the listing uses.
Compare measurements, not size labels
Size labels do not transfer reliably across markets. Two centimetres of measurement beats an entire size letter. The conversion method is covered in the size chart guide, and the same measuring discipline fixes most fit-related returns before they happen.
07Questions people actually ask
Can you return an item bought through a shopping agent?
Yes, but only while it is still inside China. Once you approve it for international shipping, returns become impractical because return freight exceeds the item's value for almost everything.
Who pays the return shipping?
Seller fault means the seller normally pays domestic return freight. Change of mind means you do. Cross-border return freight is essentially never reimbursed.
How long do you have to inspect an item at the warehouse?
Formally, as long as your free storage window — 30 to 180 days depending on the agent. Practically, file within days of the QC photos appearing. Delay weakens the claim.
Can you get a refund instead of an exchange?
Often yes, if the item is still in China. The refund usually lands as a warehouse balance rather than returning to your card, which is faster and usually cheaper if you intend to order again.
What cannot be returned at all?
Made-to-order and customised items, underwear and intimate apparel, pierced jewellery, opened cosmetics and consumables, and anything already exported from China. Sale listings are frequently final sale as well.
Order with fewer surprises. Browsing by category means choosing from items already sorted, rather than gambling on a listing with no track record.
