01Freight to the Netherlands
Mid-band for the EU, with excellent capacity.
| Parcel weight | Standard air line | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | ¥105 | — |
| 2 kg | ¥143 | — |
| 3 kg | ¥181 | typical haul |
| 5 kg | ¥257 | — |
| 10 kg | ¥447 | sea line usually cheaper |
02Tax at the border
21% VAT, the highest in the eurozone, plus the €3 flat duty.
The EU's €150 duty exemption ended on 1 July 2026. Small consignments pay €3 per distinct tariff subheading. Import VAT at 21% applies to goods value plus freight plus duty.
That 21% is two points above Germany and one above France, which matters on larger hauls: on a €300 order it is roughly €6 more than the German equivalent.
03Why parcels clear fast here
Volume, not leniency.
Dutch customs processes a large share of EU e-commerce entries and has automated most low-value declarations. The practical result is that a DDP air line to the Netherlands often clears the same day it lands.
PostNL handles the last mile and charges a clearance fee on DDU parcels. Pickup-point delivery is standard and cheap; home delivery with a signature costs more and fails more often.
04Declaring correctly
The invoice must survive an automated check.
Specific descriptions, consistent values, correct origin. Automated clearance does not mean lenient clearance — a mismatch between declared and insured value is flagged by the system, not by an officer.
05What goes wrong
Fewer surprises than most EU markets, but not none.
The usual trio: refused DDU bills, IPR detention on branded goods, and consolidation errors where two orders are packed into one box declared as one item. If you consolidate, the declaration has to list every item and its subheading.
Q&AQuestions people ask about this route
Is the Netherlands cheaper than Germany to ship to?
Freight is essentially the same band, but Dutch import VAT is 21% against Germany's 19%. On a €200 haul that is about €4 more in tax, which can outweigh a small difference in freight.
Do Dutch parcels need a packaging registration?
No equivalent of the German LUCID requirement applies to private parcels in the same way. The German packaging law is a specific national rule, not an EU-wide one.
What is the €3 charge?
A flat interim customs duty on consignments up to €150, charged per distinct tariff subheading, introduced when the EU's €150 duty exemption ended on 1 July 2026.
Freight sorted. The other half of a disappointing order is what is inside the box — and that is readable before you pay.
