0222% VAT and the €3 duty
The highest combined rate of the markets on this site.
Since 1 July 2026 the EU's €150 duty exemption has ended: consignments up to €150 pay €3 per distinct tariff subheading. Import VAT is 22%, charged on goods value plus freight plus duty.
On a €200 haul with €25 freight, VAT alone is roughly €50. That is the single biggest line in the total, larger than the freight itself — which is why DDP lines are worth their premium here.
03Clearance is the bottleneck
Expect a week longer than Germany, sometimes two.
Poste Italiane handles most last-mile delivery and the customs presentation. In practice, parcels clear in 2–5 working days at Milan and Rome, longer in December and August. A DDU parcel can sit for a week waiting for a payment link that arrives by post.
If a parcel is time-critical, choose express: express carriers clear through their own brokers and skip the postal queue entirely.
04Declaring
Italy enforces descriptions strictly.
Generic descriptions are a common cause of holds. Write the item, the material and the use. Where a haul mixes categories, the €3 charge multiplies per subheading — a five-category haul can pay €15 before VAT.
05What goes wrong
Slow clearance plus a high VAT rate plus an awkward payment flow.
The typical loss is an abandoned parcel: the recipient never receives or never acts on the payment request, the storage clock runs, and the goods return to origin at your cost. Track the parcel daily once it enters Italy and pay the request the day it arrives.
Q&AQuestions people ask about this route
Why is Italy more expensive than Germany?
Import VAT is 22% against Germany's 19%, and clearance is slower, which raises the chance of a storage charge. On the same haul, Italy costs roughly 3% more in tax and often a week more in time.
How long does Italian clearance take?
Two to five working days in normal conditions, longer in December and August. Postal routes are slower than express, which clears through the carrier's own broker.
Do I pay the €3 duty in Italy too?
Yes. It is an EU-wide interim measure on consignments up to €150, charged per distinct tariff subheading, in force since 1 July 2026.
