Shipping From China to Spain

Spain is a well-served route with a specific quirk: postal clearance runs through ADT Postales, which charges its own handling fee on top of VAT and duty.

Base rates only. ADT Postales charges a handling fee of roughly €6–20 on DDU postal parcels.

02VAT, duty and the ADT fee

Three charges, and the third one is Spain-specific.

The EU's €150 duty exemption ended on 1 July 2026. Consignments up to €150 pay €3 per distinct tariff subheading, and import VAT at 21% is charged on goods value plus freight plus duty.

On postal routes, ADT Postales presents the parcel to customs and charges a handling fee that scales with declared value. It is charged whether or not duty is owed, which is why a “duty-free” parcel can still arrive with a bill.

03Lines and last mile

Correos for postal, SEUR and MRW for express and courier.

Standard air is 9–15 days, express 4–7. Postal parcels clear through ADT; express parcels clear through the carrier's broker with a different (usually higher, but more predictable) fee structure. DDP lines remove the arrival bill entirely.

04Declaring

Spanish clearance is procedural and responds well to a clean invoice.

Value, description, origin, currency. Where the parcel carries several categories, the subheading count drives the €3 charge and the declaration must list each one. Under-declaring a 5 kg box as a “gift” with a €20 value is the pattern most likely to be opened.

05What goes wrong

The ADT payment flow is the usual sticking point.

ADT sends the payment request by email or SMS, and parcels are held until it is paid. Requests are easy to miss, and the storage clock does not pause. If you are shipping DDU to Spain, add the ADT contact to your inbox filter before the parcel lands.

Q&AQuestions people ask about this route

What is ADT Postales?

The customs agent used by Correos. It presents postal parcels to Spanish customs and charges a handling fee, typically €6–20 depending on declared value, on top of import VAT and duty.

Is Spain's VAT really 21%?

Yes. Import VAT is 21%, charged on goods value plus freight plus duty. On a €150 haul with €22 freight, expect roughly €36 in VAT plus the €3 duty.

Which line avoids the ADT fee?

A DDP line includes clearance in the freight quote, so nothing is charged on arrival. Express carriers use their own broker instead of ADT, with a higher but flat fee.

Freight sorted. The other half of a disappointing order is what is inside the box — and that is readable before you pay.
